How to create a map of contours using Roam:
The Digimap OS Roam application displays contours at a number of different zoom levels (the zoom level name is displayed in a box in the top left hand corner of the map):

  • Detailed View (1:2.500): note you need to change the Basemap to ‘Open Map – Local’
  • Street View (1:5,000): note you need to change the Basemap to ‘Vector Map Local’, ‘VML Raster10k’, ‘VML Plan’ or ‘Open Map – Local’
  • Neighbourhood View (1:10,000): all basemaps display contours except ‘VML Streetview’
  • Local View (1:20,000): all basemaps display contours except ‘VMD Backdrop’
  • District View (1:40,000): all basemaps display contours except ‘VMD Backdrop’

Some of the basemaps in Digimap OS Roam are customisable allowing you turn features off and off. For example

  1. zoom in to District View
  2. select ‘Mid-scale vector’ product from the Basemap menu
  3. expand the Map Content panel on the left
  4. turn off all the mapping features by unchecking the Show/hide all layers check box, the map will turn white
  5. scroll down to find the Height Information layers and check the box to turn contours and spot heights on

How to download contour data for use in GIS or CAD software:
If you want to get the actual contour data to create your own map using GIS or CAD software then you can use the Digimap OS Data Download service to download contour data.
Contour data can be found in the ‘Land and Height Data’ section within the OS Data Download service.
